The Glossopdale Furniture Project is a registered charity based in Glossop, Derbyshire (No: 1118353), a company limited by guarantee (No: 5541653) supported by Derbyshire County Council, High Peak Borough Council, the Clinical Commissioning Group and various Charitable Trusts. Covering the whole of the High Peak area it was set up in 1997 when it became obvious of the serious need for a charitable project of this nature.

In 1996, following an increasing number of requests received by both statutory and voluntary organisations from people on low incomes in need of good quality, affordable furniture, a member of staff from the Glossop Volunteer Bureau and a Community Worker from The Jericho Project, Gamesley (a large council housing estate in Glossop), established a steering group consisting of those agencies being contacted. Part of the research carried out during 1996 in identifying that need also connected with offers from members of the public seeking to donate furniture – and so the Project became a reality. The majority of people it helps are referred from social services, housing charities, womens refuges and many other local organisations who support individuals and families in need. For around 80 households each year the Project provides free Emergency Furniture Packs to people who have been homeless and given a new tenancy where the property has no essential items. Depending on need, a basic furniture pack can consist of a bed, sofa, chest of drawers, wardrobe, fridge, bedding, crockery, microwave, kettle and toaster to help set up their new home. The Project is the only voluntary organisation within the High Peak offering such a service and is in constant demand. It is seen by the statutory and voluntary agencies who use the Project as a lifeline for their service users.

As a charity, fundraising is on-going - because the need is always there. To support this the Project also reclaims, restores, refurbishes and upcycles furniture for sale. Its premises are open to the general public for the sale of used and pre-loved furniture which goes towards the funding of the charity. The Project relies on the donations of unwanted furniture and household items to maintain its stock for resale to the public through its showroom and warehouse on Pikes Lane, Glossop together with its shop on George Street. With a growing trend in retro déor, this is another area which keeps the Projects staff very busy. This not only helps fund the charity but also benefits the local environment by diverting over 100 tonnes annually of good, usable furniture, from the waste stream.

Since it began the Glossopdale Furniture Project has created three full-time and five part-time jobs for local people. Over the years these key people have developed the skills and experience to make the Project the success it is today. With around eight regular volunteers playing a valuable role at the Project who benefit from being associated with this successful and respected organisation, helping them develop interpersonal skills through working in and for the community and having the opportunity of going on to paid employment.
